Choosing the Right Paper for Your Print Project

Understand GSM, Paper Types, and Finishes to Elevate Your Print

Selecting the right paper stock is more than just a finishing touch, it’s a key design decision that influences how your printed materials look, feel, and perform. Whether you’re printing a business card, brochure, or report, your paper choice says a lot about your brand.

At Snap Printing New Zealand, we’re here to help you make the best decision for your next print job, balancing budget, usage, and impact.

What is GSM?

Understanding Paper Weight

GSM stands for grams per square metre, and it’s how paper thickness is measured. Generally, the higher the GSM, the thicker and sturdier the stock. Here’s a quick guide to help you match the right GSM to your project:
  • 80-110 GSM: Most commonly used for general office printing and letterheads. It’s lightweight, cost-effective, and ideal for bulk printing jobs but may not hold vibrant colour well.

  • 120-210 GSM:  A step up in weight, making it perfect for brochures, flyers, and double sided documents. Minimal show through gives your design more clarity and polish.

  • 250-300+ GSM:  This is business card territory. A heavier, more durable paper stock that feels substantial in hand. It’s also ideal for premium posters, invitations, or cover pages for reports and presentations.

Pro tip: For corporate documents, consider using a heavier stock for the front and back cover to add professionalism and impact.

Beyond Weight: Choosing Your Paper Finish

The Sensory Impact of Texture and Shine

Once you've chosen the GSM, it’s time to consider how your paper looks and feels. The finish not only affects your design’s appearance, but also how your audience interacts with the printed piece.

Here are the most common finishes we offer:

  • Uncoated Paper: A smooth, natural finish with no sheen. Absorbs ink well and reduces smudging when written on. Ideal for forms, letterheads, notepads, or manual-style documents.

  • Silk-Coated (Matte, Dull or Satin):  A soft-touch, premium feel without the high shine of gloss. A favourite for business cards, flyers, and corporate reports.

  • Gloss-Coated: Bold and glossy, this finish brings out vibrant colours and sharp imagery. Best for brochures, booklets, and high-impact marketing material.

  • Specialty Papers:  Offered in various textures, weights, and coatings for high-end projects like invitations, luxe business cards, and presentation covers.

Note: These are often brand-name papers designed for digital embellishments and usually require lamination for best results.

  • Scodix Finishing:  Looking to add a luxe layer? Scodix adds raised embellishments like foil accents or spot UV to create a tactile, stand-out result across various paper types.
